Impact of Social Media on Students – Not smartboard related but important for 21st Century teachers

By Jo

Andrew Churches used this clip at the IWBNet 8th National Conference and I found it so empowering that I wanted to share it even though it is not related to Smartboard use. However, if does follow on from previous posts related to 21st century education and social media.

I would like to update this article (23/9/2011) and post some research conducted by Lenharrt (2009) who found that:
- 93% of teens aged 12-17 go online
- 89% of online teens go online from home, and most of them go online from home most often
- 63% of teens go online daily
- 65% use an online social networking site and have a profile online
- 42% of teens using SNS send messages through social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook everyday
- Girl are more likely to use SNS than boys (86% vs 38%)

This study was conducted in 2009 just imagine what the statistics would be for 2011!

Furthermore, despite guidance and attempts to restrict membership to kids 13 and older, age restrictions are not respected or effectively enforced, as growing numbers of primary school children report that they have Facebook pages. I thought the video below might be useful for teachers with students aged 9-10. The content in meaningful, visual, current and contains background music which is appealing to students. Furthermore, it does not discourage the use of social media, the teacher isn’t standing out the front saying don’t use social networking or bad things will happen. It addresses what students can do to stay safe on the internet.

YouTube free downloader has changed – information that you might find useful

By Jo

Over the weekend I noticed that YouTube Free Downloader has changed, so I have uploaded a quick demonstration to assist you with changes they have made. Please note, I have only used the new free download since Sunday so there may be additional ‘teething’ problems and options that I have not explored yet. If would like to post a comment/idea please feel free.

Resources for Math teachers

By Jo

Math-Aid.com   is not interactive but I thought it was a great resource to share. The math worksheets are randomly generated for free and you can search by math topics on the left hand side site tab. You could use your camera tool to capture images or display it on your smartboard to reduce photocopying.

VectorKids is a great interactive website for teachers which can be used to strengthen basic math and other skills with interactive educational tools.

Interactive resources for teaching Puberty

By Jo

During Term 3 most SA schools teach aspects of puberty as part of their curriculum. For Catholic schools, it falls under the Being Sexual Strand in Made In The Image Of God (MITIOG). In January (2011) I created interactive teaching resources for a company called U by Kotex. The Notebook documents are aimed for students in years 6,7 and 8. When creating the resources, I took particular care in trying to make the resources as user friendly as possible. In particular, I wanted to make it easier for male teachers who may find this topic somewhat difficult to teach. The resources are all online and free to download as PDF, PPT or Notebook documents. All you need to do is follow the link below and then scroll down to download the resources. Below is one of the ‘bloopers’ from when I was creating the videos.

Inter-tech Education’s IWBNet resources and responses to questions

By Jo

IWBNet 8th National Conference was a success today and Joanne met many inspirational teachers. We would like to remind you that Joanne was not presenting on the latest Interactive SMART board. The lastest Interactive SMART board is the SB85ix series which has multi-touch, freestyle interaction, touch gestures and object awareness (similar functions as those displayed in the foyer). SMART also has a SMART Table interactive learning centre which allows for multi-touch and collaboration. For video demonstrations of the these product, features and price inquiries please follow the links below.

Jo had several questions/inquiries:

1. Australian Money gallery, MAB blocks and an interactive Trash Bin gallery items (trash bin originally provided by Electro board). Please find the three gallery collection items below. Remember, these are for use on a SMART board only. After you have downloaded them and open them, they will appear as a blank Notebook document. Simply go to ‘My Content’ in the Gallery and you will find the images there (which you can drag across as needed).

2.Q: What version of Notebook software should you be running? A: You should be running Notebook 10.7 unless you are using a dual touch SB885ix series (my dream). You should also have Gallery Essentials (6,708 items) and Tool Kit 2.0 (762 items). Below is the link in case you need to upgrade. If you currently run 10.7 and don’t have to maximum number of items, open a Notebook document, click on the gallery icon on the side bar, select the spanner which is located next to your gallery search option, select check for updates and follow prompts.

3.Q: I don’t have a SMART board; can I use an interactive ruler/protractor/calculator? A: SMART software is well known for its high quality and user friendly software. However, purchases of IWB is generally an administration decision and teachers have the obligation to work with the resources that they are provided with. Here are a few interactive links which non-SMART users may find helpful when teaching Maths.

4. During a SMARTboard Y6-9 Maths presentation, Joanne showed a YouTube clip related to The Wizard of Oz and Pythagorean Theorum, after the presentation Glenn Pardy showed her a similar visual reference related to The Simpsons. Below is the YouTube clip:

SMART Notebook 10.8 has been released!

By Jo

SMART Notebook 10.8 is now available to download. From my understanding, the update was made in regards to a few bug fixes with the multi-touch gestures. So if you don’t have a new SB800 series I would skip this update and stay with Notebook 10.7.

‘Freeze’ option on your projector remote control

By Jo

Did you know that most projector remote controls have a ‘freeze’ option button? If you press this button on your remote control, the image that is displayed on the SMART board will remain there. It enables you to display instructions/worksheet/questions for students to answer rather than wasting time and paper through photocopied materials. It also allows you to work on your PC whilst students view the ‘frozen’ image on the SMART board.

SMART Notebook ideas for teaching myths, fables and legends

By Jo

I have created a video demonstration to give you some interactive and visual ideas using SMART Notebook software in order to teach aspects of myths, fables and legends. My ‘rule of thumb’ (figure of speech), no more than 2 video takes applies to this demonstration, hence a blue pause throughout the video for some unknown reason. The web links used throughout the video demonstration are located under the video file.
